Google has finally started rolling out Android 4.2.2 update for Nexus 4 smartphone a few hours ago. The update is now available over-the-air, but similar to most other updates, it is being released in batches. So, it might take days to reach every Nexus 4 unit.
The update brings few improvements to quick settings, new sounds, few changes to app download status bar, security fixes and performance improvements. It reportedly also removes any traces of LTE support, which were present in the Nexus 4 software.
You can manually check for the update by going to Settings>>About Phone>> System Updates, however Google will automatically notify you when the update is available for your phone.
In case, you don’t want to wait, you can always downloaded the update from the direct link and apply it manually.
There are two ways to manually apply this update. Here are the instructions for both the methods.
Using Custom Recovery
- If you already have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM installed on your Nexus 4, you can download the update file using the above link, save it to your Galaxy Nexus. Boot in recovery, apply the update file and you are done.
- If you don’t already have a custom recovery, you can also update your phone using a temporary recovery. Download Nexus Root Toolkit, open it, make sure you have necessary drivers installed and have transferred the downloaded update file to your phone. Go to advanced utilities; choose the option for temp CWM. Your phone will boot in CWM recovery, apply the update file and you are done.
Using ADB Sideload
- First make sure you have the latest ADB version installed on your computer, else install it. Now download the update file and put in a folder.
- Reboot your Nexus 4 while holding the Volume Down button. You will see the fastboot menu and “Start”, use Volume Up button to navigate to “Recovery” and then use the power button to select it.
- You will see an Android with a red exclamation icon, press Volume Up and Power buttons together, and you will be taken to a new menu. Go to “apply update from ADB” and select it.
- Now, connect your Nexus 4 smartphone to your computer using USB cable.
- Open command prompt in the same folder where you have downloaded the update file. In windows, you can press shift and right click, it will show the option “open command window here”.
- Enter the following command:
adb sideload de8b8d101614.signed-occam-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.de8b8d10.zip
- Let ADB do its work and you are done.

Is there any disadvantage of updating using adb sideload? Will I get future updates as OTA or will I have to sideload future ones? Or is this same as the difference between network install and download entire .exe file and installing in Windows. Please let me know since I have updated my Galaxy Nexus using sideload after getting impatient for the OTA to appear on my phone.
@Solomon No, there is no disadvantage of any of these methods. You will get future updates.
