Pantech Vega R3 aims to take on Samsung Galaxy Note 2, iPhone 5 in South Korea

Weeks after introducing a 5-inch display sporting Vega S5 to take on Galaxy S III, Pantech is now ready with Vega R3 to take on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 2 and Apple iPhone 5 in South Korea. The Korean market is dominantly mainly by Samsung, with LG and Pantech following it.

Pantech’s new R3 features a Sharp manufactured 5.3 inch Natural IPS Pro HD display, Android 4.0.4, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 13MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and 2,600 mAh battery. It also comes with LTE, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0.

The smartphone will be released on country’s three mobile carriers starting Tuesday.

“The smartphone market is changing into an unprecedented scene of fierce competition … Vega R3 is the best existing quad-core smartphone. I dare tell competitors to learn from Pantech. Pantech grabbed the No. 2 market share last year. If we properly compete with the iPhone 5, we anticipate reclaiming the position sometime in the first half,” company vice president Lee Joon-woo said at the launch event.

Can it compete with Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Apple iPhone 5?

Well, considering the specifications on paper Vega R3 certainly seems like a worthy competitor to both Note 2 and Apple’s iPhone 5. Company has even added several software customisations on the device to add more value to it. Pantech Vega R3 comes with best face feature, which helps users choose the best shots of different people in a photo and mini window feature that allows users look up words in a dictionary while watching videos with subtitles.

If we look at the statements by Pantech executive at the launch event, he also seems very confident of the phone’s capabilities. Well, we will have to wait for the release tomorrow and see the consumer response for the phone.

  1. this phone is absolutely horrible….when i had a galaxy S2 i had NO problems. Apps worked flawlessly, camera took amazing pictures.

The vega can barely focus and all of the pictures come out sort of yellow looking and terrible. I can’t stand this phone. such a mistake.
