In the Android world, there are a plethora of options available to Twitter users for getting their tweets from their phone or tablet to the Internet. We’ve seen just about all of them and to be honest, there’s only a few out there that are even worth mentioning. Plume, by LevelUp Studio (the same team responsible for Beautiful Widgets), is one of those select few.
Just in case you are unfamiliar, Plume is a Twitter client for Android devices that offers all the functionality one can expect from such an application. It offers quick access to your timeline, direct messages and mentions. The app also features more customization options than you can shake a stick at.
Earlier today, Plume 3.0 was released and every other Twitter client developer out there should take note of the major redesign the update brought along with it. The new UI plays heavily on the Ice Cream Sandwich standard Holo theme, making the app a perfect match for Android 4.0’s UI. It even looks amazing on older devices running Gingerbread and Froyo.
Unfortunately, support was dropped for devices running Android 1.6, so if that’s you, you might want to consider catching up with the rest of us and getting a real Android phone.
After only a few moments of toying around with the new version, I’ve fallen in love. Have a look at some of the screenshots I snagged from my phone and judge for yourself.
In addition to the new UI, Plume now has TMI.me support for tweets longer than 140 characters and MyPict.me support for uploading pictures. Also, uploaded pictures can be resized depending on the network type that you are using, which called for the addition of a new permission as well. Throw in a few bugfixes, and we’re looking at my new replacement for the official Twitter app.

I liked the old interface better. I disable swipe scrolling because it’s otherwise too easy to change columns, and things were more in reach in the old version. Before, I could just tap them with my thumbs as I was scrolling. Now, I have to move my hand all the way to the top of the screen to tap. They also removed the ability to load new tweets by tapping on the timeline column button in Live Stream mode, and removed the swipe down to create new tweet function.
I guess it looks ok, but I don’t think it looks any better than the old version, and this version is a fail in every other way.
