Olive Telecom to launch India’s first HSPA+ Android phone on Feb 9 [Update]

It seems the rumors are true, Olive Telecom just sent us a smartphone launch invite. Rumors were rife about the possible launch of a high end Android phone from Olive Telecom, and looks like it is happening.

But, it looks more than just a normal smartphone, as the invite clearly states that it will be the first HSPA+ enabled smartphone of India. There is no mention of Android, but considering the past information and inviting, we are pretty sure that the smartphone will be Android powered.

Event also includes the participation from Aircel and Qualcomm, which clears that Aircel will be partnering with Olive to launch this phone, and the smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm processor, Snapdragon??  – we expect it is powered by that as India seriously needs low-priced but big on specs Android smartphones.

Coming back to Olive’s upcoming HSPA+ smartphone, we have put together a wish-list, let’s see how much of it can Olive Telecom fulfill.

  • 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Android 2.2 [2.3 would be great] – We are getting Gingerbread [See update]
  • 512 RAM
  • 2 GB Internal Memory
  • 5 MP camera with a front facing VGA cam
  • 3.5 inch display
  • All this in a price below INR 18K.

Do let us know about your expectations from this phone in the comments.

Update: We just heard from a credible source that the smartphone will be powered by Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread, which will actually make it the first Gingerbread smartphone to launch in India.

  1. This would be a fantastic phone if it launches with the stated specs. If the build quality is good, I will buy it.
