SK Telecom adds 1 mn Android users in 6 months
South Korea’s SK Telecom added its millionth Android user yesterday. This record comes in just six months after SK Telecom introduced the first Android-based smartphone Motorola Motoroi in South Korea.
The most popular models running Android in SK Telecom’s portfolio include the Galaxy S from Samsung Electronics, the Vega from Pantech and the Desire from HTC.
“Korea is the only country where the Android operating system is the leading [mobile] operating system,” said Bae Joon-dong, SKT’s executive vice president.
SK Telecom’s smartphone strategy is totally focused on Android. Taking another step in the same direction, SKT recently signed a pact with Google to popularize Android app development in South Korea as well as introduced carrier billing.
Android seems to be on a steep growth curve in South Korea, United States and Chinese markets. According to Canalys, in US Android shipments rose 880% in Q2 from last to this year.
