Android is growing and we all can see it. Day after day one or another smartphone manufacturer announces availability of some or the other Android device. Canalys, an independent tech analyst house, is saying that in 2010, smartphone shipments are expected to exceed 65 million units in North America. While the smartphone shipments totaled 47.2 million units in 2009, an increase of 27% over the volume seen in 2008, the growth is forecast to accelerate to 38% in 2010.
For phones running on Google’s Android OS, Canalys states:
Shipments of smartphones running Google’s Android platform are forecast to see the strongest growth in 2010. In 2009, 4.7 million Android devices shipped in North America. With new devices from HTC, Samsung, Motorola and LGE, among others, this number will grow in 2010 by 169% to more than 12.3 million units, with considerable growth expected for several years ahead. 21.7 million Android smartphones are expected to ship in North America in 2013.
On the other hand Digitimes is also reporting via some industry sources that Sales of the Nexus One Google phones in its first year on the market could reach only 1-1.2 million units compared to 2.5-3.5 million units as originally projected.
