No Nexus One for Verizon, Google says go for Droid Incredible

Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, said it has no current plans to distribute Google Inc.’s Nexus One phone, focusing instead on other handsets that use the company’s Android operating system.
“Obviously, if they want to do business with us or sell the device, we’re open to that,” Verizon spokesman Marquett Smith said. Google’s Web site directs Verizon customers seeking Android phones to try the Droid Incredible, made by HTC Corp.

No Nexus One for Verizon, Google says go for Droid IncredibleGoogle had said in January that Verizon would eventually provide service for the Nexus One. The carrier has broadened its smartphone line as it vies with rivals like AT&T Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. for a shrinking pool of new customers, with more than 9 phones for every 10 people in the U.S.
Carriers have turned to smartphones as more consumers seek devices that can function as pocket computers, surfing the Web and playing video. Smartphone sales probably will climb 46 percent this year, more than triple the pace of the overall handset market, according to Gartner Inc.
Google representatives Mistique Cano and Oliver Rickman didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
T-Mobile USA Inc. already carries the phone, while Sprint, the third-largest mobile carrier, has said it will debut the device as well. Mountain View, California-based Google also makes a version of the phone that will operate on AT&T’s network.
Verizon Communications Inc., which co-owns Verizon with Vodafone Group Plc, fell 9 cents to $28.96 at 9:32 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The New York-based company’s stock had declined 12 percent this year before today.
Vodafone said today it will sell the device to customers in the United Kingdom on April 30.
