Microsoft continues to milk Android manufacturers

Acer, ViewSonic latest to sign patent license agreement

After getting HTC in its bag last year, Microsoft has now forced Acer, ViewSonic to sign patent agreement to save them from being sued. This agreement will protect both the companies from being dragged in patent lawsuits by Microsoft for the use of various patents in their Android devices.

Although Microsoft is tight lipped on agreement terms, it is likely that both the companies will be a paying a fixed amount per sale of their Android products similar to what was agreed with HTC.

“We are pleased that Acer & ViewSonic are taking advantage of our industrywide licensing program established to help companies address Android’s IP issues”

- Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft.
