900 million Android devices activated till date: Google
Google has announced today at the Google I/O keynote that over 900 million Android devices have been activated till date. This is not all; Google has also revealed that these 900 million users have installed over 48 billion Android apps till date.
Of these 48 billion apps, 2.5 billion were installed in the last month itself.
To put these numbers in perspective, there were 400 million activated Android devices last year, so in the last one year, over 500 million devices have been activated. On the apps front, Google had shared the 25 billion app installs number in September 2012, meaning in the last eight months, over 23 billion Android applications have been installed. At this rate, Android will soon overtake the Apple’s 50 billion app installs.

Samsung ships 6 million Galaxy S4 units in 15 days
Introduces new Arctic Blue colour variant of Galaxy S4 in Japan
Samsung has revealed that it has shipped 6 million Galaxy S4 units worldwide in just 15 days of launch. The company had begun selling the smartphone on April 26 in South Korea. Samsung also predicts that it will reach 10 million units by the end of May.
The company had shipped the first four million units in April itself. “As of the end of April, we supplied four million Galaxy S4 handsets to telecommunication operators around the world,” an executive at the company said recently.

Android accounts for 75pc of worldwide smartphone sales in Q1: Gartner
Gartner has released its first quarter smartphone numbers today. As expected, Android is still leading the charge with 74.4 per cent of the worldwide smartphone sales in Q1, 2013, followed by iOS. Other smartphone OS players are still far away and don’t seem like a threat to these two leading platforms.
“There are two clear leaders in the OS market and Android’s dominance in the OS market is unshakable,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. “With new OSs coming to market such as Tizen, Firefox and Jolla we expect some market share to be eroded but not enough to question Android’s volume leadership.

27.8 million Android tablets shipped in Q1, 2013: IDC
Android was present on 56.5 per cent of all tablet shipments in the first quarter of 2013, claims IDC in its preliminary Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker report. Clearly showing that Android has finally topped iPad shipments, however the recently released Strategy Analytics report had some different number to share. According to Strategy Analytics, Android tablet market share in Q1 was only 43.4 per cent, which is less than 48.2 per cent share of iOS.
Coming back to the IDC report, in terms of the vendors, Apple still leads the pack followed by Samsung, Asus and Amazon.

Jelly Bean overtakes Ice Cream Sandwich in Android platform data
As, we get ready to see another version of Jelly Bean, Android devices running on Jelly Bean have overtaken Ice Cream Sandwich-powered devices in the world. According to the latest platform distribution numbers shared by Google, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1 + Android 4.2) is now present on 28.4 per cent of devices compared to ICS’ 27.5 per cent.
This the first time, we are seeing Jelly Bean grab the second place in Android version stats, while Gingerbread continues to remain on top. However, the number of Gingerbread running devices is declining every month; it is now present on 38.5 per cent devices down from 39.8 per cent.

Samsung phones, Google on top in Opera’s SAMW report
Opera has published its State of the Android Mobile Web report for India, which reveals the browsing patterns of Opera Mini users in the country. As this report contains data from Opera Mini users, it is skewed towards entry-level segment and 2G data consumers, who are the main users of the Opera Mini browser on Android.
High-end Android smartphone users as well consumers will 3G data plan are more likely to use Chrome, Android browser or the full version of Opera.

Smartphone shipments overtake feature phone shipments in Q1
For the first time, smartphone shipments have crossed feature phone shipments, claims IDC in its quarterly mobile tracker report. According to IDC, overall 418.6 million mobile phones were shipped in Q1, 2013, showing a modest growth of 4pc year over year. Out of the total mobile phone shipments, 216.2 million units were smartphones, which were 51.6pc of the total shipments.
“Phone users want computers in their pockets. The days where phones are used primarily to make phone calls and send text messages are quickly fading away,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “As a result, the balance of smartphone power has shifted to phone makers that are most dependent on smartphones.”

Micromax sells 1 million Canvas smartphones
Micromax has announced that it has sold over a million of Canvas series smartphones so far. The announcement comes as the company gets ready to launch two more Canvas smartphones.
The original Canvas smartphone – A100 Superfone Canvas was launched in August last year and since then the company has released three more Canvas smartphones – A110 Canvas 2, A116 Canvas HD and A72 Canvas Viva. It took the company more than seven months to achieve this feat.

LG ships 10.3 million smartphones in Q1 – highest in a single quarter for the company
LG has announced its first quarter financial results today and they had some good news regarding the company’s smartphone business. According to a press release issued by the company, it shipped 10.3 million smartphones in the last quarter – highest for LG since it entered the smartphone race, thanks to the sales of Optimus G, G Pro and L-series.
The release adds that LG Mobile posted KRW 3.21 trillion (USD 2.96 billion) revenue in Q1, which increased 28.5 per cent year-on-year basis.

Upcoming Motorola phones are “phenomenal”: Eric Schmidt
Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt revealed at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference that the upcoming Motorola smartphones are “phenomenal.” He went on to further praise them and said “think of them as phones-plus.”
Well, Google is really raising our expectations for these upcoming Moto phones, which probably include the much-rumoured X Phone from the company.
He did not add much about these phones, but he did share some statistics about Android activations.
According to Schmidt, there are currently around 1.5 million Android devices activated each day, which is up from the last reported 1.3 million count. He also added that the total activations should cross 1 billion by the end of year.
