India – The Android First Nation

In my earlier post, I had discussed about the higher preference for iOS among international developers and that developers were more or less unsatisfied with the Android marketplace when it came to revenues.

However, is the case similar in India where the Android phones outnumber other operating systems?

I decided to investigate the following using popular apps from Utility, Banking, Retailing Entertainment and News organizations from India.  Here are my findings.

The Future of Android

The year 2011 saw Android grow to become a force to reckon within the smartphone OS market. Android phones have claimed over 40% of the world market share in 2011(see table below).1 The Future of Android

The dominance of Android is not limited to a single market like USA either. It has passed iOS in UK in 2011, starting from almost nowhere year and a half ago. Growing from around 10% market share, today Android holds over 50% of the UK smartphone market share (source).  Android has even taken over the high potential market of China with over 60 million models sold in 2011. (source) Even in India the pace of adoption of Android smartphones has been accelerating for quite some time now.

The MIUI ROM is known throughout the world. It ranks right up there with CyanogenMod as one of the most popular ROM’s to date. Those of you that know what I am talking about would have only changed from it for one simple reason, ICS. For the rest of you, you may have no idea what I am blabbering on about. It would be worth your time to check into it. A good place to start is HERE. If flashing custom ROM’s isn’t built into your DNA, you can at least appreciate a great music player application. Lets face it, the stock one on our devices lacks a certain amount of flair.

Google Play Store and the whole Google Play branding is not only a big change to the way we use our devices, but also a huge move for Google and Android as a whole. Many of you may have thought you deleted your market some how, absolutely hate the new name or icon, or can’t believe Google just dropped an update with out warning. Your situation could be worse. A whole slew of Motorola device owners were just as irritated as you were, with the exception that they couldn’t even use the new Play Store. Apparently there was an incompatibility issue between the update and certain versions of the MotoBlur UI. Most notably, users couldn’t install anything and kept getting broken links. What a drag.

That is what many owners of the Archos G9 tablet series started seeing today. Keeping true to their word, they have started pushing out the OTA to all of the G9 owners around the world.

After Samsung Israel hinted towards March 15 as the ICS release date for Galaxy S II, Philippines branch of the company is now telling that update is coming as early as March 10. Again, this is only valid for Philippines users, so other international users might receive updates on their GS2 smartphones on a later date.

Android leads the pack in comScore’s latest report

ComScore, the digital research firm, has just published its latest report on the US smartphone market share and Android has the largest pie with 48.6% market share, up 2.3%. This data has been obtained for the three month period- ending January. This comes as no surprise and shows that Android is still on the growth curve.

Here and there, there is an App everywhere

‘We’ve got an app for that’ would hold true for most of the things by the end of this year, shows a survey conducted by Robert Half technology. Robert Half Technology is a pioneer in providing IT professionals on full-time basis or contract basis.  The survey was carried on by an independent research firm, which conducted telephonic interviews with more than 1,400 CIOs from firms with more than 100 employees across the United States of America.

And would you believe that almost 49% of them will have a mobile app by the end of 2012.
